In September 2020, Siemens together with the Technical University Munich organised an 5-days on-site summer school devoted to different aspects of Digital Twins (DT). Due to the COVID-19 situation, only 20 students were admitted to participate in this event.

During the summer school, the mornings started with students attending lectures and Siemens’ labs (including maker space). In the afternoon students participated in hands-on challenges, organised in small groups of four 4 students. The Siemens’ department participating in iPRODUCE – UX Platforms & Prototypes – took this opportunity and presented Generative Design technology and its application in iPRODUCE in a 1-hour talk.

The summer school also defined a special challenge “UX meets DT” for the week of the summer school, where students developed a smart product with parametric design, applying generative design techniques. After a comparative study, one design was instantiated and printed with two 3D printing technologies: FDM & SLA. For the resulting 3D models, electronic prototypes were applied connected to its digital representation, showing the correct functioning of simulated 3D design corresponding to the actual behaviour of physical equipment and also the interactions between physical world and digital representation of a smart product.

At the end of the week, the student groups presented their results in short pitches.
