Owner: MATERALIA

Additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing), is a process of creating physical objects from digital designs by adding layer upon layer of material until the final shape is achieved. Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, which involve subtracting or shaping material to create the final product, additive manufacturing builds up the object layer by layer, using materials such as plastics, metals, ceramics, and even living cells Additive manufacturing allows for greater flexibility and customisation in design, faster prototyping, and reduced waste compared to traditional manufacturing techniques.

The objective of this guide is to introduce the different methods of additive manufacturing and their advantages and disadvantages and their applications to support user to choose the right method according its needs. To do this, the guide will introduce you to:

  • The general manufacturing process of a 3D printed part.
  • Benefits and opportunities of additive manufacturing, specially from the environmental perspective.
  • The role of software in additive manufacturing.
  • The different additive manufacturing processes: Powder Bed Fusion, Material Extrusion, Sheet Lamination, Vat Photopolymerization, Material Jetting, Binder Jetting and Direct Energy Deposition.
